Sabbath Prayers

Friday Night

Candle lighting (18 minutes before sun set)

Blessed are you Lord our God, King of the universe, who is sanctified us with his commandments and has commanded us to kindle a lamp for the Sabbath.

May it be your will that our holy masters light would shine throughout all worlds.

Prayer for family

May it be your will, O Lord, my God and God of my father’s, that you be gracious to me (my husband, my sons, my daughters, my father, my mother) and all my extended family. Give to us and to all Israel a good, long life. Remember us by bringing goodness and blessing. Take note of us by bringing salvation and compassion. Bless us with great blessings and make our homes complete. Let your dwelling presence abide in our midst. Permit me the honor of raising wise children and grandchildren who love the Lord, who fear God, who are people of truth, holy offspring, who cling to the Lord and illuminate the world with Torah and good deeds and through all their labor in service of the creator. Please hear my request at this time in the merit of our mothers Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah, and make our lamps burned so brightly that they will never be extinguished. Make your face shine, and we will be saved. Amen.

Blessing the children

For a boy

  • May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh

For a girl

  • May God make you like Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah.

May the Lord bless you and protect you, may the Lord make his face shining towards you and be gracious towards you. May the Lord lift his face towards you and establish peace for you.

Let the spirit of the Lord rest on him: a spirit of wisdom and discernment, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

Kiddush for Shabbat (when the sun goes down)

And there was evening, and there was morning

The sixth day. Heaven and earth were completed in their entire legion. On the seventh day, God finished his work that he had done, and on the seventh day he ceased from all his work that he had done. God bless the seventh day and sanctified it because on it He ceased from all his work that God created to make.

With your permission – l’chaim (To Life)

We thank you, our father, for the holy vine of your servant David that you may know to us through your servant Yeshua. Yours is the glory forever.

Blessed are you, O Lord, our God, king of the universe who creates the fruit of the vine.

Blessed are you a Lord our God, king of the universe, who has sanctified us with his commandments and has shown us favor, and has lovingly and willingly let us inherit his Holy Sabbath, a memorial of the work of creation. For it is the beginning day of the Holy convocations, a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt. For You chose us and sanctified us from all the peoples and lovingly and willingly let us inherit your Holy Sabbath. Blessed are you, O Lord, who sanctifies the Sabbath.

Recommended for gentiles

Lord of legions, God of Israel, you created the world by your word, and you separated a Sabbath as a memorial; for on it you ceased from your work in order to meditate on the words of your Torah. For the Sabbath is a rest from creation, a completion of the world, a seeking of words of Torah, and expression of praise to God, to thank Him for what He has given to mankind. Blessed are you, O Lord, who sanctifies the Sabbath.

Hand Washing

Blessed are you, O Lord, our God, king of the universe, who sanctified us with his commandments and has commanded us about the washing of hands.

Blessing for Bread

We thank you, our father, for the life and for the knowledge that you have made known to us through your servant Yeshua. Yours is the glory forever.

Just as this piece of bread with scattered over the mountains and gathered together, so may your assembly be gathered from the ends of the earth to your Kingdom. For yours is the glory and the power through Yeshua forever.

Blessed are you Lord, our God, king of universe, who brings forth the bread of the earth.

Yom ShabbatSaturday

Kiddusha Rabba (Oneg)

Therefore, a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God. For one who has entered his rest has ceased from his work, just as God did with his. Thus, let us be careful to enter that rest.

If you hold back your feet on account of the Sabbath from doing whatever you please on My Holy Day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and call the Holy One of the Lord honored, if you honor it by not making your own way, seeking whatever you please, or speaking inappropriately, then you will delight in the Lord, and I will let you ride on the heights of the earth, and I will feed you with the inheritance of your father Jacob, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

The children of Israel shall observe the Sabbath, making the Sabbath and eternal covenant throughout their generations. Between me and the children of Israel it is a sign that in six days the Lord created heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased and was refreshed.

Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath for the Lord your God. You may not do any work, you your sons, your daughters, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the sojourner who is in your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven, earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day.

Recommended for gentiles

Foreigners who are joined to the Lord, to serve him and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, everyone who keeps from desecrating the Sabbath, and those who hold tightly to my covenant – I will bring them to my holy mountain, and I will make them glad in my House of prayer; Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be favorable on my altar, from my house will be called a House of prayer for all nations.

Thanksgiving After Meals Prayer

Psalm 126 (on Shabbat and Holidays)

A SONG OF ASCENTS.  When the LORD brought back the captive ones of Zion, we were like those who dream.  Then our mouths were filled with laughter, and our tongues with joyful shouting.  Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”  The LORD has done great things for us, and we are glad.  Bring back our captivity, LORD, as the streams in the Negev.  Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.  He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing bringing his sheaves.

Invitation (when three or more men present)

Leader:  GENTLEMEN, let’s give thanks.

Others:  May the name of the LORD be blessed from now and forever.

Others:  Blessed is the One from whose food we have eaten, and by whose goodness we live.

WE THANK You, LORD our God, for the inheritance you granted the fathers, a pleasant, good, and spacious land.  Leader: Blessed are you, LORD, for the land and for the food.  (Others:  Amen).

PLEASE have compassion, LORD our God, on Israel Your people, on Jerusalem Your city, on Zion the dwelling place of Your glory, and on the kingdom of the house of David, Your anointed one.Show favor and strengthen us on this Sabbath Day. Leader:  REBUILD Jerusalem, the holy city, swiftly in our days.  Blessed are You, LORD, who in His compassion rebuilds Jerusalem, Amen. (Others: Amen).

BLESSED are you, LORD our God, King of the universe, God our Father, our King, the good King who does good to all.

(Personal prayers may be added here)

May He allow us to see the days of the Messiah.  May He who makes peace in His heights, make peace for us and all Israel, and everyone say, AMEN.
